Practical Magic, by Alice Hoffman

From the New York Times best-selling author of The Dovekeepers...

For more than two hundred years, the Owens women had been blamed for everything that went wrong in their Massachusetts town. And Gillian and Sally endured that fate as well; as children, the sisters were outsiders. Their elderly aunts almost seemed to encourage the whispers of witchery, but all Gillian and Sally wanted was to escape. One would do so by marrying, the other by running away. But the bonds they shared brought them back-almost as if by magic...

Fall in love whenever you can . . .
By A Customer
That is an admonishment at the end of this wonderful book by Alice Hoffman. I'll preface my mini-review here with the following statement: Had anyone told me a year ago that I would read --in one day-- a romance about lives and loves of successive generations of women blessed or cursed with witchy powers, I would have laughed at them. A few years back, I tried to watch the movie "Practical Magic" and found myself thoroughly bored by what I considered a talky "chick flick." Since then, I've become a fan of Sandra Bullock and recently saw the film again, and found myself liking it for the most part. I particularly loved the sad, wistful character played by Bullock, that of Sally Owens.
So I checked the book out from the library, not knowing what to expect, and like a man in the story who becomes enchanted by a letter Sally writes that comes into his possession, "Practical Magic" hooked me. Hoffman writes with such easy, beautiful prose and the characters really spring to life and find a place in your heart and imagination.
I won't regurgitate the plot here. But I will say that Hoffman writes so well about perhaps the most exquisite and maybe the rarest kind of love, the type that hits both a man and a woman like a thunderbolt, overpowering and sweeping them both away. Hoffman's descriptions of this happening to Sally and her sister and the two men that they are destined to be with packs a tremendous and very satisfying emotional punch for any romantic, which I guess I am. Oh, how I found myself envying the lucky men who won the hearts of Sally and Gillian! To feel love as strong as that and be loved as fiercely in return must be the best thing in the world.
So read the book and like Sally Owens would say, fall in love whenever you can.

Not my usual cup of tea...
By Kathy Taylor
I was excited when I found out this book was real. I grew up watching the movie and I had fell in love with how in the MOVIE the sisters had an unbreakable bond and the aunts were they type of aunts I desperately wished I had growing up. Aunts who let the girls eat chocolate for breakfast, did magical spells in the kitchen, wore purple and made midnight margaritas. However, aunts in the book are very different from the film. They are much older and much creepier. The book doesn't really talk about a family curse that the Owens women are plagued with but as you read you find the sad truth of just how the "cruse" started and how it trickled down to Sally and Gillian.
The book is almost the opposite from the film in every way. Sally and Gillian are sisters that lose their parents and are sent to live with their aunts who are the local witches in a very small and close-minded town. The aunts pretty much let the girls raise themselves which causes Sally to become the logical one who always had to think and calculate every step before she takes it and Gillian who throws caution to the wind and wears her heart of her sleeve. In the book, Sally is very resentful of her sister and at times hates her. The book is well written but tends to drift off in places. One moment you're reading about how difficult of a time Sally is having raising her teenage daughters and the next you're reading about the thoughts of a pizza delivery boy who makes a brief appearance in one paragraph.
Sally loses her husband in a freak accident and then spends a year basically as a mute who ignores her daughters and responsibilities as a mother. Gillian marries many times and leaves her husbands heartbroken because the sparks has gone out for her and she finds herself in a bored. Hoffman describes the way the sisters fall in love with their "true loves" like being struck by lightning. When Gillian shows up at her sisters place - after having not seen each other for many years - with her dead boyfriend she is in desperate need of help. The book and film are two different types of stories. The movie leaves out so much and changes important plot points. The book in its own way is beautifully written and a very different type of love story. Not my usual cup of tea...but I defiantly would recommend it.

Champagne in a Cauldron
By Jean Baldridge Yates
You never know what to expect from an Alice Hoffman book, except for an incredibly light touch that belies her sharp contol of plot. She has such finesse as she writes, and she writes in such a unique style, it is hard to put one of her books down for a second. This author loves writing, and it shows. You will love the results. I do not think there is another living writer who is able to entwine such magic and realism into a story the way she does, all the time focusing on daily life and never losing sight of the mysteries that cause us to act in the ways that we do, sometimes for good reasons, sometimes for bad reasons.
When there is a double ragged ring around the moon, when the smell of lilacs is strong and it is well past the time they should have finished blooming...when you have a family whose odd heritage goes back hundreds of years and they draw people to them unexpectedly...there you will find Alice Hoffman, weaving happy endings out of strange happenings, and lovely images out of eerie events. Don't ever try to outthink her. Part of the fun is just enjoying the way she pulls it all together in the end. Truly special.
