Really good recipes, directions could be a bit better for beginners

I bought this at the same time I bought the Instantpot on Amazon. The first recipe I tried was the Perfected Pot Roast which was excellent. The one problem I had was in step #4 he stated to perform a quick release, in which I did and ended up with juices spewing out the top of my pressure cooker all over my walls and cupboards. I called customer service for the Instantpot and was told never to do a quick release with meats!! (I guess I also should have read the manual). I was terrified to use the quick release method again until I read some posts on a pressure cooking forum on how to do it correctly. I have tried quite a few of his other recipes with no problems and they have all been excellent!

UPDATE: I now have tried many of Bob's recipes in this book and have to say they are amazing!! They are easy to follow and come out perfect every time. My favorites so far; German Pot Roast, Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki and the Perfected Pulled Pork. Yum!!

The best pressure cooker book you can buy!

I purchased mine when QVC released them as I have his 1st pressure cooker book and I knew how much I loved it. The second book by him is an excellent follow up. So many to pick from with full color pictures. I have tried many pressure cooker books and I can say that without hesitation...nothing comes close ...not even marginally close...to this one. Easy ingredients combined with excellent instructions and awesome pictures makes this book sit on the top shelf in my house.

Great Food for Regular People!

I've read other pressure cooker books and found them to be full of what I consider strange food. This one is full of regular recipes for regular people. Not boring, but food most people will be happy to cook and eat. You won't have to buy a bunch of specialty ingredients that you'll only use once. The recipes are simple, and delicious. A great book!

An excellent social skills resource

One of my purchases this spring was The New Social Story Book because I wanted some 'home' curriculum of social stories. After reading reviews I settled on this book and I'm quite satisfied. I think a lot of the social story books that I had seen in the past were targeting pre-school to 1st grade kids as well as much lower functioning kids. Carol Gray's book is most definitely targeting late elementary to middle school higher functioning kids. The language is mature and straight forward, but still appealing to a child.

We've been using the book for four months now and I'm very pleased. My son is fine with reading the stories together and discussing them and he's liked several of the 'activities'. We started with the intro, but then skipped around to the areas that he was having the most immediate need. The book tackles many critical areas for kids on the spectrum such as change, mistakes, bullying, school, as well as basic social skills areas such as greetings and parties. There's also a large section dealing with feelings, emotions, and feeling comfortable. I really like her 'Fort Able' concept.

After hitting some 'key stories' for him, I went back to the beginning and have been doing most of the pertinent stories in order (The Fort Able section in full) and occasionally skipping some stories that aren't too applicable or he's pretty much beyond.

The front section of the book contains a lot of great information for the parent or therapist who wants to learn about social story construction and usage.

There's a CD that includes pdf and word copies of the book to print out if desired for group activity or printing some of the activity sheets to fill out.

This book is an excellent resource. My plan is to continue using the book for the remainder of the summer and hit the 'school' section in full the week before school starts back up. And absolutely, this book is a great resource for neurotypical children as well! Everyone can benefit from thinking about and discussing social stories, even me:)

Very good. Some stories are a little wordy.

Very good book for work with children with a variety of social needs. My only criticism, is that some of the stories are kind of wordy, while also being a be short. However it says you can omit or add words in order to make it more appropriate. I would have liked to have more stories about stress or anxiety. Moreover, I really like the stories that are linked to little activities and that talk about change and Fort Able. They are cute little stories for kids.

Very helpful book

This is NOT a very long book about therories, ideas and opinions. This is a tool. It teaches you how to make stories that help your child navigate life (about 40 pages or so). The rest of the book is full of wonderful stories that help your child understand the world in which they live and how to relate to it. My 7yo with autism likes the stories, my 13yo borderline MR with autism does not like it... but in general she never wants me to talk to her or explain things to her. She tantrums often. I am going to have to find a way to make it worth her while to listen.

Good Introductions

Prof. Alister McGrath is a moderately conservative theologian and an ordained minister in the Church of England. He has written a large number of works, some of which are quite technical and others which are more introductory in nature. The best thing about his introductory writings is that they don't presuppose a knowledge of the subject, but at the same time they aren't simplistic.
This work is a collection of four smaller introductory works by Prof. McGrath: (1) UNDERSTANDING DOCTRINE; (2) UNDERSTANDING THE TRINITY; (3) UNDERSTANDING JESUS; and (4) JUSTIFICATION BY FAITH. I think UNDERSTANDING DOCTRINE is the best because it makes a persuasive case for why doctrine -- and not just feelings -- matter.
One problem I have with this work, like some of Prof. McGrath's works, is that he frequently discusses Karl Barth (1886-1968) the well-known Swiss Reformed theologian. Barth was the principal player within the school known as "neo-orthodoxy." To some he is a towering writer of a more or less Evangelical bent, to others he is something of a modernist. Some traditional Calvinists, such as Gordon Clark and Cornelius Van Til, wrote works criticizing Barth from the Calvinist perspective. I'm not competent to say how faithful Barth was to the Reformed tradition, but Prof. McGrath owes it to his readers to point out that there is quite a controversy about this. Unfortunately he doesn't. (See, e.g., McGrath, HISTORICAL THEOLOGY, 238-39.) This book isn't a "mini" systematic theology. There are all sorts of important topics that Prof. McGrath doesn't discuss (such as ecclesiology and eschatology). Nonetheless, taken as a whole, it is a good introduction to Christianity from a Protestant perspective.

If he confirms what you already believe, you may enjoy it.

I bought this book at the recommendation of a Presbyterian minister with whom I was discussing the Trinity. The minister said McGrath could explain and prove the doctrine of the Trinity. In fact, he spends almost no time attempting to prove it. It is written for people who already believe it, but I'm not sure how much it actually would help such a person. He does all the usual reasoning by analogy without ever finding any analogy that actually works to explain the Trinity. He uses multiple contradictory analogies. He uses scripture passages in contradictory ways, using the same passage to mean one thing one place, and something opposite someplace else. I found it a hopeless muddle, but then, perhaps my expectations were too high. What can one really expect from a book that attempts to explain what even the author acknowledges is inexplicable?

It also seemed to me that the author does not exactly conform to an absolutely orthodox or creedal Trinitarianism. At times, he takes positions that sound modalistic, reasoning that the three "persons" of the Trinity are actually three "personas." But then, he goes on to contradict himself, which is not completely surprising as the doctrine is inherently contradictory, but left me unusure what he was really trying to say.

If you believe in the Trinity and want a fellow believer to meander around in speculations, some orthodox, some not, in a futile attempt to explain the incomprehensible to the lay reader, then it may be of some value to you. If you are looking for a book to prove the doctrine, either to yourself or someone else, that is not the author's intent.

Great reference, needs better editing

This book is comprehensive and has a lot information on A LOT of herbs. My biggest qualm with it is the editing. I keep finding typo after typo. Okay, maybe I've found like eight, but I have only read about 30 plant profiles in the whole book and they seem to pop up more and more. This matters when you are writing up information about plants and include Latin names, constituents and herbal actions. Spelling matters. I like the book and find the spelling errors forgivable. It's good that I have a few other books to cross reference the spelling. Or I can use the internet.
Some of my other herb books, that are written by more well-known herbalists give completely opposite information, mostly in areas regarding the moisture of the plant or its temperature. Hard to say who's right and plants can have opposite effects on two different people.
If you can only buy a few books on herbal medicine, I wouldn't choose this one. Although, I personally like it and use it. I would have given this book 3.5 stars but I rounded up because I have a few herbs books that I bought and never use. At least this one comes off the shelf.

Admittedly, I am not educated in this type of ...

Admittedly, I am not educated in this type of science, and while this appears to be a very thorough guide, there are no photos or illustrations of the herbs described. Of course, I can use the internet for this end, but had I known the book completely lacked photos and/or illustrations, I would not have purchased this volume. That said, I'm sure its value and use will prove itself with time.

This guide to herbal medicine provides informative and instructional assistance for those new to herbal healing. It would be more helpful with illustrations or photos of each element, so they can be more easily identified. Overall a good general guide.
