I was shocked it was only a half inch thick. I expected the size of a GRE study guide so I am relieved. So far so good in prepping me for test. My favorite part is the practice test and detailed answer key with explanations of why other answers are wrong.

Essential for the Lay Person.

Having a hand in designing your own office? Buy this book. Does is matter if you are in a metric country or use feet and inches? No, it does not. Want to know how high the desk should be? Want to know how big the office should be? Want to know how big to make the circulation areas? Given the price of the fit out, this book with save you a bucket of money, even if you are a lay person. There are lots of books that just give you the vibe. This book gives you the measurements.

Can't Not Have This

This is a required book for anyone in Interior Design for a good reason: it has about everything, including the (many kinds) of kitchen sink. What I really can't stand about using it is the seemingly arbitrary indexing, scattered locations for information and nearly impossible to decipher graphics on some pages. I do not agree that it has much useful information on furniture styles: you'd be better off to shell out for Aronson's "Encyclopedia of Furniture" or Miller's "Furniture" and get right to what you need. The standard dimensions are useful, though, especially for space planning purposes. Don't be surprised if there is information missing in some cases, or it is outright incorrect. Be sure to cross-reference and here's another tip: make a cheat sheet for yourself for the pages you use most, tape it to the inside cover and go from there. The Index is a goose-chase. Why three stars? Because I think they can do better. It is time for a rehaul of the Silver Monster.

This is the interior designer Bible. Don't go to studio without it. This will help you plan and design everything imaginable. It is a huge book but well worth its price and weight. I highly recommend this book to any design student going into Architecture or Interior Design.

On Genius and the Workings of the Creative Process

Nowadays, there is much discussion in the public domain on the concept of genius, on Creativity and on Innovation. We see people like Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and many others being labelled as 'creative' or 'genius-like' or 'innovative'. At the same time, we do not see much elaboration on the precise reasons for marking these individuals out for such special mention except by reiterating the products and ideas for which they are responsible and how much their thinking diverges from the mainstream. What we don't find is a substantive discussion on what this 'Creative Process' really is and how it actually works and what its psychological foundations are. It is this quest which brought me to read this book.

I have always enjoyed reading Sudhir Kakar's insights into cultural psychology, mysticism and psychoanalysis. When I saw that he was one of the authors of this book, I wanted to see what his insight into the subject is. However, it turned out that this book is a collection of six essays on Creativity from six different authors, with Kakar contributing just one, on the Indian perspective of the creative artist. Three articles dwell on the cross-cultural views on Creativity, one each on the Indian, Western and the Chinese. Two others are in the inter-disciplinary perspective from Psychoanalysis and Neuroscience. The final article by James Kaufman looks at Creativity through a generalist approach. Overall, we come across many definitions on what is creative and some approaches to understanding the creative process itself.

The Western perspective is dealt with by co-author Günter Blamberger who suggests that the West has always set wrong priorities by focusing on the personal origin of Creativity , leading to hopeless aporias and myths. The West has a tradition of seeing Creativity as a triad of divine inspiration, mastery of the rules of the domain and scholarly knowledge. Blamberger proposes that we must bid farewell to this concept of 'Genius' and move away from singular creatorship and towards viewing Creativity as an Experience and as a Process. Today's creative practices are mostly processes based on division of labor within collectives and Creativity itself must be viewed as an inter-disciplinary and cross-cultural question.

Sudhir Kakar presents the Indian perspective on artistic creativity based on the classical treatise on the Performing Arts, namely 'Natya Shastra', written around 200 BCE, and on the modern works of renowned art historian, Ananda Coomaraswamy (1877-1947). In the Indian view of the creative artist, he is not a flawed being or prone to melancholia or madness. Rather, to be truly creative, it was necessary for individual personality traits and complexes to be transcended. Coomaraswamy formulates it as '..the Indian artist, though a person, is not a personality'. Creative Imagination is an inborn faculty due to impressions of past births that is so strong in the artist that it responds to the slightest stimuli which are usually ignored by others. Kakar wonders as to how many contemporary Indian artists share this view of the artist as emotionally balanced and artistic creativity as a matter of connecting with the transcendent, spiritual unconscious.

The Chinese perspective of Creativity is outlined by Weihua Niu simply as the very nature of everlasting interaction between the creator and the context, as something evolutionary rather than revolutionary. The focus of Creativity in the Confucian outlook is on novelty and appropriateness, where appropriateness is understood as fitting according to the changing context in a collaborative manner, given a specific situation. On the other hand, the Taoist view of Creativity is to make a connection between oneself and nature, possibly by immersing oneself through meditation.

In the inter-disciplinary discussion, I liked the essay by Margaret Boden on 'Creativity as Neuroscientific Mystery'. Boden says that there are three types of creativity, namely Combinational, Exploratory and Transformational. They are explained as follows:
Combinational Creativity is the generation of unfamiliar combinations of familiar ideas. A scientific example would be viewing the Atom through the Solar system model.
Exploratory Creativity is to use existing rules to generate novel structures. Examples would be to write a new Computer program using a known programming language or writing a new essay in English or creating a new painting in a known style such as Impressionist.
Transformational Creativity is the most exciting of all in that it breaks culturally sanctioned rules within a domain and leads to the creation of a novel idea which seems 'Impossible'. One can think of many examples in Science and in the Arts like Literature and Music.
Boden says that these three forms of Creativity involve different types of psychological processes and that Combinational Creativity is within reach of Neuroscience today. As for Exploratory and Transformational, she says that the human brain is a Connectionist system and we need to understand much better than we do today as to how 'connectionism' can emulate a von Neumann machine before coming to a Neuroscientific view of these two types of Creativity.
Most of us can probably feel good about having experienced some aspect of Exploratory Creativity in our lives and some might have indulged in Combinational as well.

As I came to the last essay in the book, the creative process still remained largely an enigma. Still, the essays provoke our mind and induces us to explore further.

Best step forward into the RE world!

As a newbie...I think this is my best step forward. I haven't finished the book completely. Am kinda like more than half way through it, but am so impressed that I felt the need to let you folks know what an amazing investment this has been. This book guides me to things that will help me understand and be prepared for the first few days/months and years while being established in the RE world. I don't want to give away the key points...but all I will say is that this is a MUST READ for newbie and aspiring RE agents. This is kind of like a training and one to one coaching session in itself. Thakyou for this Frank. A pleasant co-incidence is that even my RE pre-licensing course's instructors name was frank...and I am so glad I chose him over the rest of the schools.

Very Informative

I like this book because it answers questions that aren't normally included in your training and educational classes when you first enter the Affiliate Broker world! It was very concise, humorous and helpful. It helps you deal with the relatives who want you to waive your commission, the clients who want to haggle with you on your commission, what to expect as a newbie, some of the "darker" (a.k.a. "not so fun") aspects to expect and so much more. I would recommend this book to anyone who is new to the business.

The cellphone on the cover should have been a give away. Though only 12 years old, most of the content is as pertinent to today's real estate arena as a VHS player is to todays entertainment market. The book was published before social media, the recession, etc., etc..

If your instructor tells you to buy this book then you know why your instructor is teaching real estate and not practicing it.

It is the life story of Klaus Kinski, the superb screen actor who died in 1991. With graphic detail, Kinski narrates his excessive sexual exploits and fanatical adoration of his son. Few celebrity memoirs are remotely as raw, pornographic and confessional as this notorious self-portrait by German actor Kinski (1926-1991), today best known for his brooding, expressionistic performances in Werner Herzog's Fitzcarraldo and Aguirre: The Wrath of God. When Random House, fearing legal problems, withdrew publication in 1989 of an earlier version of this book, All I Need Is Love, Kinski's memoir became an underground classic. This new and, according to Viking, unabridged translation shows little patience for documentary minutiae. So manic, hallucinatory and self-obsessed is Kinski's account of his rise from a dire childhood in the slums of Berlin to international stardom that it yields a far clearer picture of his seething inner life and incorrigible womanizing than of his film career. In an angry, raving, sometimes barely coherent present-tense narrative, Kinski describes being drafted into the Nazi army at 16; suffering in an English POW camp; gaining prominence in the fringe theater of a war-ravaged Germany. He goes on to cover his star turns in a slew of second-tier genre pictures shot in Italy and France as he contemptuously turned down directors like Fellini and Kurosawa, who wouldn't pay his escalating salary. He then discusses his roles in the Herzog films, plagued by production problems in the depths of the Amazon jungle. Kinski's take on Herzog drips bile and exudes dementia ("he doesn't have the foggiest inkling of how to make movies. Every scene, every angle, every shot is determined by me"). Throughout the memoir, however, acting is mere background to a lifelong sexual odyssey, including dozens of encounters explicitly rendered here?with young actresses, hookers, chambermaids and, in two memorable scenes, Alberto Moravia's wife and Idi Amin's daughter. In this raging memoir, the devil isn't just in the details: he's everywhere.

Insane, but a priceless look into the mind of a rather unstable artist. Kinski's book will haunt you, and not just the salacious bits, either. He has an eye for beauty that is as strong if not stronger than his appetite for the base.

Kinski was a bizarre guy...he really seemed to have a mix of wonderully generous qualities, with a lot of (maybe more) absolutely horrendous qualities. (As the review below says, the original version of this book, ALL I NEED IS LOVE, has Kinski hinting that he slept with his own daughter, Nasstasja, which is about as horrendous as you can get. He did sleep with his sister, as he relates in here, so he wasn't a stranger to incest.) It's definitely a unique biography...a lot of explicit sex. A lot. And, like any pornography, it, after the initial shock, wears thin and gets monotonous. The writing is hyperactive and explosive, and is definitely a result of Kinski's worship of Dostoevsky, the most hyperactive writer of them all. (Kinski named Nasstasja after a character in Dostoevsky's novel THE IDIOT, and was involved with trying to get a stage version of CRIME AND PUNISHMENT in production). He's no Dostoevsky, but Kinski's book does keep your attention a lot of the time.

About the Author

Stephen P. Robbins received his Ph.D. from the University of Arizona. He previously worked for Shell Oil Company and Reynolds Metals Company and has taught at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Concordia University in Montreal, the University of Baltimore, Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, and San Diego State University. He is currently professor emeritus in management at San Diego State.

 

Dr. Robbins’s research interests have focused on conflict, power, and politics in organizations, behavioral decision making, and the development of effective interpersonal skills. His articles on these and other topics have appeared in such journals as Business Horizons, California Management Review, Business and Economic Perspectives, International Management, Management Review, Canadian Personnel and Industrial Relations, and The Journal of Management Education.

 

Dr. Robbins is the world’s best-selling textbook author in the areas of management and organizational behavior. His books have sold more than 7 million copies and have been translated into 20 languages. His books are currently used at more than 1,500 U.S. colleges and universities, as well as hundreds of schools throughout Canada, Latin America, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, and Europe.

 

Dr. Robbins also participates in masters track competition. Since turning 50 in 1993, he’s won 23 national championships and 14 world titles. He was inducted into the U.S. Masters Track & Field Hall of Fame in 2005.

 

Timothy A. Judge earned his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His past academic experience includes working at the University of Notre Dame, King Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia, University College in London, the University of Florida, the University of Iowa, Cornell University, Charles University in the Czech Republic, Comenius University in Slovakia, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

 

Dr. Judge has published more than 154 articles in journals such as Journal of Organizational Behavior, Personnel Psychology, Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Applied Psychology, European Journal of Personality, and European Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology. He serves as Director of Research for Stay Metrics Corporation, linking his research with application in the trucking industry.

 

Dr. Judge is a fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Academy of Management, the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, and the American Psychological Society.

 

In 1995, Dr. Judge received the Ernest J. McCormick Award for Distinguished Early Career Contributions from the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology. In 2001, he received the Larry L. Cummings Award for mid-career contributions from the Organizational Behavior Division of the Academy of Management. In 2007, he received the Professional Practice Award from the Institute of Industrial and Labor Relations at the University of Illinois. In 2008, he received the University of Florida Doctoral Mentoring Award. And in 2012, he received the Editorial Board of the European Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology (EJWOP) best paper of the year award.

 

In addition to Organizational Behavior, Dr. Judge has co-authored Staffing Organizations, 8th ed. (Mishawaka, IN: Pangloss Industries, 2015).

 

Although he cannot keep up (literally!) with Dr. Robbins’ accomplishments on the track, Dr. Judge enjoys golf, cooking and baking, literature (he’s a particular fan of Thomas Hardy and is a member of the Thomas Hardy Society), and keeping up with his three children, who range in age from adult to middle school.

I attended an Organizational Behavior graduate level program that used this textbook. I was very impressed with the quality and consistency of writing. I have suffered through enough bad textbooks to appreciate decent writing and organization. This was superb.

As with hardcover, no access code in loose leaf version

I bought the loose leaf version because I will be doing some traveling two weeks during the course. With loose leaf, I can take whatever chapters I need during the trip, lightening the travel load. It's nice the price is a little cheaper than the hardcover. Being proactive, I bought this a week in advance of the course. However, I soon realized this didn't come with the self assessment library CD or an access code to the online version. I later read some of the hardcover reviews also complained of no access code included. There should be a warning on both the loose leaf and hardcover descriptions stating no access code is included. Code to be purchased separately. After spending $100+ on the book, adding the cost of the access code (or CD) is quite pricey.....and the prices vary from $25 to $65 (using Google). The warning would help students allocate their budget, and give them a chance to ask the professor/teacher if the assessment is actually needed for class - before purchasing one.

Great Book With Relatable, Real World Examples

Rented this book last month for grad school. As far as texbooks are concerned, this one is very easy to read and comprehend, which is a plus when the school term is moving so fast. I would say that my class only covered probably about half of the book (in my class we used both this book and another book called Operations Management), but what we covered from this book was very helpful. The examples used to illustrate principles such as conflict, leadership, diversity, etc were very relatable to my day to day working environment. If your class uses this book, this one will be one of your more enjoyable ones.
