Simple books are the best

"First 100 Words" by Roger Priddy was bought as a gift for my sons’s first birthday and it is the perfect book for a one year old. It is quite a basic book and the sort of board book most children will have at some stage in their life. It definitely deserves mention, as my son chooses it from his library nearly every day.

Previous reviews have indicated some confusion over the book size. This version of the book is pretty small (it's 5 x 6 inches; an over-sized ABC/colors version can be found here), and it can withstand rough little hands as it is a board book.

Each brightly colored page shows various photographs alongside the corresponding word. I like that it uses photographs instead of illustrations (animals wearing clothes, etc.). The pages are split into themes of things your LO will probably recognize from everyday life, such as clothes, food, things that go and so on.

My son has had this book for a couple of months now and it’s been a huge hit with him. He will sit on the floor and look through it himself. Together, we look at the pages and I point to each picture and say the word. I’ve started him with some Tiny Tutor videos to supplement our lessons while I do chores around the house. We do this most days and the repetition seems to be paying off, as he seems to recognize a new thing in the book every day.

Although rather basic on the face of it, I am really delighted with this book and wish we’d had it sooner. It is selling for under $5 on Amazon which I think is a real bargain. I’ve noticed there are some similar titles, such as First 100 Animals and First 100 Numbers Colors Shapes. I will be looking to purchase these in the future too. It seems the simple things really are the best sometimes.

Perfect for diaper bag

This book is perfect for the diaper bag! It's small, and my 13-month old can enjoy it whether or not anyone is available to read it to her. It has kept her entertained through many restaurant mealtimes and car rides. You'll be amazed how many words your child knows when you ask her to point to specific pictures throughout the book!

Best book for toddlers at every learning stage!

Bought this book for my 1 year old as she began to show an interest in looking at books herself. It is her favorite! Not only is the outside cover soft, but the pages inside are study boards. The book itself is small, perfect size for a toddler with small hands. She can carry it around and turn each page on her own. Every two pages has a theme, such as "Outside" or "Bath" or "Toys", every word has its own colorful square and photo. This is a great tool for a young toddler who is beginning to learn how to say the names of everyday objects or activities. My daughter and I will sit down and I will point to each object and say the word, she will try and repeat the sound. Sometimes I will say "show me where the cat is" or "can you point to the airplane" and she loves finding the objects on the page! I loved this book so much we bought the "first 100 animals" also. Worth every penny and more!

About the Author
Charles W. L. Hill is the Hughes M. Blake Professor of Business at the University of Washington Business School in Seattle. His research interests focus on competition and competitive analysis, corporate strategy, international business, organizational structure, and corporate governance. Dr. Hill has published more than 50 articles in peer-reviewed academic journals and has served on the editorial boards of several top tier journals, including the Academy of Management Review and the Strategic Management Journal. He also is the author of a successful international business textbook. An active consultant, Dr. Hill has worked with numerous companies. He has worked with Microsoft for almost 20 years and continues to be active within that organization. He received his PhD from the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom.

Gareth R. Jones received his PhD from the University Of Lancaster, England, and he is trained in Economics and Organizational Theory and Behavior. His research interests include organizational design for performance, the evolution of business, and corporate-level strategy. Dr. Jones has published articles in all the major management journals and is co-author of several textbooks.

Outstanding treatment of the subject

There is no question that for a graduate course in business strategy, either in an MBA or a PhD program, that this book serves as an excellent textbook, covering all aspects of businees strategy in a global economy. All strategies are covered, along with each advantage and disadvantage. Strategies for expansion and survival into foreign markets, as well as locally are fully covered. Of course, the requirements for competetive advantage and how to get there is given thorough treatment.

For the person in business who wants to review or read about business strategies, this book is also an excellent reference tool.

The case studies throuout the book are very illustrative of the points being made.

One thing to be aware of is that the publisher's website does not always deliver to the student all that is promised. If a new edition is published even within weeks of an older edition, then the student who purchased the older edition finds him or herself wihtout much of the promised information available. This happened to me. The ninth edition was published right before my semester started, and the school had already purchased the 8th edition. I contacted the publisher over this, and basically I was S.O.L.

I shall use the text as a reference for years to come.

Poorly Written

First of all, there are two different editions of the book that have the same exact covers and titles and authors, but are completely different. I accidentally bought the wrong one and didn't figure it out until I couldn't find what the instructor was talking about on page 220. When I did obtain the correct version with many case studies in the back appendixes, there were lots of typos and grammatical errors that made some of the examples confusing. The only reason I'm giving the book 2 starts instead of 1 is that the examples were pretty interesting.

This book is easy to read and interesting for a textbook. This paperback edition, however, does not include the case studies. If you need the case studies for class get the hardcover edition.

Excellent Writing Workshop Lessons

This book and e-binder are excellent sources of minilessons for writing workshop in the middle grades. Nancie Atwell provides her rationale for each lesson, a scope and sequence of lessons for the year, a succinct description of the basics of writing workshop and the 76 minilessons as well as a cd with all the reproducible handouts that accompany the lessons. Lessons That Change Writers is the companion book to Atwell's In the Middle: New Understandings About Writing, Reading, and Learning. I highly recommend both books for anyone teaching reading and writing in grades 5-8.

About the Author
Parveen Kaur Dhillon is a Sikh-American who is passionate about spreading multicultural education through the celebration of various traditions and holidays. She is the award-winning author of My First Sikh Books, a set of books designed to strengthen the pride and self-identity of young Sikh-American children. Parveen co-authored the curriculum for The Sikh Next Door, a multimedia, cross-cultural, educational project that provides a glimpse into the Sikh-American experience of children across the United States. She has also co-authored resources on bullying prevention and is active in multiple Punjabi community activities.

Parveen holds a Masters in Education from the University of Virginia and a BA in History and Asian Studies from Loyola University. She studied in Nanjing, China as an undergraduate and taught English in Japan for the JET program.

Parveen was born in Virginia, raised in Maryland, and is settled in San Jose, California, with her Blue Devil husband, her twelve-year-old magician, her ten-year-old crafty artist, and her seven-year-old music lover.

Great for educating our little 2 year old about her Punjabi heritage. I love the English and Punjabi. My daughter loves the songs in the back. I wish there was a CD with music to sing these songs with. That would be an awesome addition and I know we would enjoy those songs in the car!

What a Wonderful Gift to Warm Winter Hearts

Just got this book for my 4 year old daughter who loves to dress up in her Punjabi clothing and needless to say she is loving it.

The book is a beautiful and colorful introduction to the fun filled culture of Punjab. Ajeet and Raakha are celebrating Lohri by dressing up, dancing, singing the Lohri song and enjoying the yummy treats around the bon fire. The book brings it all to you, the song, the recipes, the cultural significance, all through bilingual child friendly poetic story telling. Must have for all times to come and read to the kids every winter to warm their hearts and keep the traditions alive.

(Pictures - My little Punjaban is fixated on the sweets page and wants to share them with all. She says "Thank You for this gift to me and to all children").

Learn better methods through activities

I purchased this book for a masters class and it was really a worthwhile read. This is a great book that looks in depth at areas of mathematics we have to teach in K-8 education. The book includes several activities which I highly recommend doing as you read! I learned things about prime numbers, multiplication, and many other subjects which I had either long-since forgotten or never actually learned. This book helped me to reevaluate how I was teaching mathematics and how I can present information in a way that will help students internalize number concepts rather than just memorizing processes.

A Must have!!!!!!!!!

This is not just a text book approach to math for students. It offers teachers many options, ideas, and approaches to the math for students. It also provides reminders of the thought process and the math involved in given situations. I appreciated the "review" for me and therefore, for my students. Things I would have taken for granted, I now realize must be reviewed for the students. Thank you.

thorough, if unexciting

Conceptual, rather than procedural teaching of math--that is what this book tries to encourage. Although elementary math teachers can often (but not always) find the right answers for math problems, they overwhelmingly are ignorant as to WHY they follow steps spelled out in the procedure they learned so long ago. A teacher who does not know why cannot teach why. This makes for students floating in a permanent math fog. This book tries to fill the gap by laying out math basics--the mathematical principles behind the steps. I am a bit disappointed that no mention is made of the identity properties, but all in all, this book does a good, if sterile job. If you want to get EXCITED about understanding elementary math, you need to read Liping Ma's Knowing and Teaching Elementary Math.

About the Author
Luke was born and raised on a cattle property in New South Wales, Australia. After years of struggling as a cattleman Luke came to the conclusion there would be no future in making a decent living from cattle breeding or farming in general. He had no idea after he sold the cattle property, and started to look for a financial advisor that he would end writing a book alerting people to what he believes is the best way to prepare and prosper in this existing financial debt crisis that precedes the great depression. He is totally committed and passionate about getting this information out to as many people as will listen. Once you understand this thinking you can prepare and succeed not only in the long slow winter deflationary season but in all seasons of our economy.

Sinful not to own.

The idea of the Green Lantern Corps is one of the genuinely genius concepts in the DC or any comics universe. Superficially similar in nature to the Jedi Knights of Star Wars, the Green Lantern Corps are essentially space police, and their tales chronicle the exploits of sentient representatives from various solar systems around the galaxy, given immensely powerful rings that are powered by will. Lanterns know no fear, or are at least able to overcome it.

This edition collects issues 27-32 of the regular, currently ongoing DC comics series Green Lantern Corps (GLC), and is the second full collection featuring the work of "new" writer Peter Tomasi. It's a strong collection of exciting, interesting stories, with an epic scope that is made all the more intriguing due to the broader narrative going on in the background, namely the impending "war of light" (a prophesied conflict between representatives of the emotional spectrum, each signified by a different color, green representing courage or will) to be chronicled in the "Blackest Night" series, still to be published/released. It's not necessary to know about it, but for regular readers, it adds to the richness of the tapestry that serves as the backdrop to the stories here. Trust me, if you're into science fiction, horror, you like military style movies and are a fan of Star Wars, this is a volume you will probably enjoy very much, although I would also recommend you buy the other GLC volumes offered here on Amazon.

The basic plots of the six issues collected here have been touched on by the other review, so I'll just briefly focus instead on what works in each one. The art by guest artist Luke Ross in the first two chapters is stellar and a good contrast to the often confusing if never boring Patrick Gleason who draws the final four chapters. These two issues quickly capture the peril of corps life, and the magic inherent in the GLC concept. The threat to the corps involves their family, and is creepy to boot. The meat of the collection is the final four chapters, involving a genuinely scary and threatening villain, and I congratulate Tomasi on his originality in her/its creation. (Gleason's art makes it sometimes difficult to tell.) Kryb is a member of the Sinestro Corps, mortal enemies of the GLC and wielders of rings powered by fear. Her mission is novel; to steal and possess the children of GLC members from different worlds. Horrific to look at, Kryb is also powerful, managing to hold off several lanterns on her own. Think of a crazed terrifying alien mother creature abducting the children of others, and you will get the idea. Also in this volume, Tomasi continues to exploit one of the greatest strengths of the series, which is that characters can and do die. Green Lanterns die in the series all the time, and there's a real sense of peril; characters one gets attached to can go any minute. In fact, regular readers of the series will often take this fact for granted, and it will sometimes sneak up on you, so that when a character actually dies, there's some genuine surprise. By far the most intriguing part of the collection though, is the "diplomatic" confrontation between the Guardians and the Zamarons, ancient relatives who separated from them eons before. The Guardians are threatened by increasingly obvious displays of power by the Zamarons, which rivals that of the Guardians, and undertake a tension filled visit to their home planet. The Zamorons believe that love alone can save the universe, while the Guardians believe all emotion is dangerous. Will and logic alone drives them, and the difference in philosophies sets up a key conflict likely to be explored in the upcoming `war of light.'

Tomasi is continuing the strong tradition of storytelling begun by Dave Gibbons when the series launched, and this volume is an improvement on his previously uneven writing. The six issues collected here form a very strong, very compelling narrative. Patrick Gleason does his usual to do justice to the story drawing the final four chapters. His work is solid, and even spectacular in some places. It is also busy and difficult to follow in parts. He has however been a stalwart regular of the series, but I am beginning to feel that he's reached the pinnacle of his growth here, and that it is time for him to move on to new challenges. If so, Luke Ross would be an excellent replacement, although, DC is hardly ever that smart.

Fear battles love

With the Sinestro Corps war having ended, we can move onto more important things, like Guy Gardner and Kyle Rayner opening an intergalactic bar on Oa (called Warriors). However, the yellow-ringed Sinestro Corps still wander the universe and strike at the Lanterns' families. A new corps, the Star Sapphires emerges, from the Zamarons, immortal beings who split from the Guardians millennia ago since they believe in the power of love to heal while the Guardians value logic and reason and seek to shut out the emotional spectrum entirely. Yellow Lantern Kryb appears, and she's far scarier than the Quintet seen in the "Eye of the Beholder" storyline. The third law is enacted, forbidding romantic relations between lanterns, and this potentially will affect Kyle and Soranik Natu, Guy and Tora, Hal Jordan and...everyone else.

Star Sapphires Are Awesome!

Okay, the only time I've ever read about the Star Sapphires before this was that one issue where she was introduced in the Silver Age where her powers and origin were only vaguely explained. But this book along with Blackest Night did a great job of filling in the gaps in my knowledge.

So the Star Sapphires have their own version of the Guardians, but they are all female and they are powered by love instead of will. Not only did this book tell me more about the sapphires, but it had awesome side stories about Guy Gardener opening a bar on Oa for the Green Lanterns to relax in, the Sinestro Corps attacking the families of the Green Lanterns, and about Kryb stealing the babies of Green Lanterns.

I originally thought the book was going to be just an annoying prequel to Blackest Night, but I was very happy to find out that this was a story arc that could stand on it's own two feet and had a lot to add to the overall storyline of the Green Lantern Corps.

This is a must read for any fans of Green Lantern, or anyone trying to get more background info about the Star Sapphires or the storyline leading up to Blackest Night.
