Visually Compelling, Easy to Read and Navigate

This is probably one of the better science textbooks that I have had the pleasure of reading. It makes biology very easy to digest, especially for non science-y types like myself. The chapter introductions are interesting, the little “What a Scientist Sees”, sections in each chapter are highly interesting as well. Each chapter contains bright headings, very detailed colorful graphics, and colorful subheadings, allowing you to easily navigate through the various topics. Chapters also contain critical thinking, as well as self test questions at the end of each section, letting you check how much of the information in each chapter that you have absorbed.

The text has a very well done layout, starting off with an intro to the WileyPLUS format and some helpful student studying success strategies before moving into the material itself. The material is organized quite nicely, beginning with an introduction to life itself, before moving on to species and family systems, cellular biology and tissues, and finally a comprehensive look at human biological systems and population growth and changing ecosystems. Rounding out the text is a chapter summary, glossary and index.

With its lush visuals, detailed internal organic overviews, sidebars detailing interesting side material and easy-to-digest concepts wrapped in an effective and user friendly navigation system, Visualizing Human Biology is a worthy read, for newcomers to biology or experienced biologists alike.

I am just received the textbook, and as I ...

I am just received the textbook, and as I was going through it, I noticed that there was heavy highlighting in Chapter 5, a few of the self-test already had highlight marks on the answers, and one of the pages has fallen out. Other than that, the book is what I need for my class this semester.
**On a side note, and this isn't a reflection of the product itself, but every time I get a package from Amazon, it seems that it has already been opened, and the box it comes in is always very damage. Currently, I work in a warehouse, and I understand that time moves very quickly, and to be honest, I don't know if it is reflection of Amazon or its shipping company (UPS), but I think something needs to be done.

The book would be great... Some high lighting but that's OK.... Problem is... I was reaching the end of chapter one and the last six pages were ripped out!!!!!! Seriously!!!!! Who knows how many more are... Ugh... So annoying and of course my class has already started! Hopefully there aren't any other pages missing.

Best Southern African Bird Guide!

The Southern African Subregion may have the most field guides of any region, but the SASOL guide is undesputedly the best field guide to the region and probably the best bird book in Africa!
The book illustrates every single of the 900 species in full color. The plates are beautifully illustrated and the species are often shown in flight and females and juveniles are very often illustrated. The only very slight downside is that the plates are a little small, but there is a new, larger version that has been newly published in South Africa by Struik Publishers (Cape Town).
In South Africa's Birds & Birding magazine it was voted as the best field guide of the region by many ornithologists

About the Author
Ari Berman is a political correspondent for The Nation and an investigative journalism Fellow at the Nation Institute. A powerful and provocative look at attempts to limit the right to vote

This book provides a superb history of the events leading to the Voting Rights Act, and the history of the impact of the Voting Rights Act, including countless efforts to limit the voting or impact of minority voters. The book also makes clear that the impetus behind voter fraud concerns and restrictions on early voting and registration is really an attempt to limit the voting of the poor and minority voters. Royal Masset, the former executive director of the Texas Republican party said that "anyone who says that a lack of voter ID won't discriminate against otherwise legal minority voters is lying" and said voter ID laws were "sheer racism" designed to suppress Democratic voters (at 259-260). Cutbacks in early voting hours were defended by the Republican party chair in Ohio who said we "shouldn't contort the voting process to accommodate the urban-read African-American-voter-turnout machine" (at 264).

easy to read

I really enjoyed reading Give Us The Ballot. Berman brought the subject of voting rights with all its historic, legal, racial, human, and political implications to life through the stories of the people whose votes were denied, made difficult, or deliberately weakened.

Weaving the story of John Lewis, the great civil rights leader throughout the account created an element that connected me into the struggle, victories, and defeats of voting rights. Understanding the role Chief Justice John Roberts has played in the Voting Rights struggle was new information for me.

This book was an easy, engaging read which helped me develop a better understanding and deeper appreciation for the issue of Voting Rights. I highly recommend this book.

A riveting book

Ari Berman's recent book, "Give Us the Ballot", is a tour de force when it comes to describing how the Voting Rights Act of 1965 became law and the desperate and vicious attacks since then on that law. It's no surprise that southern states, long in their own history of violence and voter suppression, figure heavily here. It's a shameful record.

While events leading up to the passage of the Voting Rights Act are well documented and narrated by the author, the real interest for me as a reader is what has happened since. The book really begins to crackle when Berman describes the 2000 presidential election and the mischief that occurred in Florida. Leave it to misfits like Katherine Harris to disregard the votes of so many Floridians. "Give Us the Ballot" is an exceptionally well-crafted and documented book. The personal stories of many voters who were not allowed to register and/or vote are presented here and their reflections are all too sad... and yet for them, necessary to be related to readers. I highly recommend "Give Us the Ballot" because it tells the story of how a great country of ours can be reduced by those people in power who can't see the forest for the trees."

Revamping of the Student Study Bible

I am constantly recommending study Bibles to fellow believers, and because of that, I am thrilled with this new option. When the original ESV Study Bible came out, I felt that the exhaustive collection of notes was overkill for the general Christian. (I picked one up, but I'm also a theology nut.) Plus, it was pricey and (at least until the Personal Size edition) unwieldy. The Student Study Bible came next, and while I was relieved to see the number of notes pared down to the essentials, I also knew that most adults would feel uncomfortable with its name. Sure, it's not nearly as ludicrous as the Extreme Teen Bible, but it's still sorta embarrassing, and it implies a substandard level of understanding (rather than what it actually entails: a sub-seminary need for understanding).

Recently, I saw this new item, the Global Study Bible, pop up on Amazon and on Crossway's site. My first assumption was that it was merely another watered-down gimmick Bible with some photos and quotes from missionaries--and no accompanying substance. There are certainly plenty of fluff Bibles available, and with the recent release of the Student Study Bible, I was not expecting another edition so soon on that level. Well, upon checking out the GSB, I discovered that it was essentially a rebranding of the SSB with a new set of internationally-themed articles to replace those found in the previous two editions. While that news might turn off some buyers, it had me thrilled. "Global" certainly had a more pleasing connotation than "Student" on a Bible cover, and the study notes were still as superb as ever!

Even better, the Global Study Bible offers dual incentives on the monetary front, allowing you to save a few pennies and perform a charitable act at the same time (as contradictory as that sounds). This volume is less expensive than either its parent or its sibling, which makes it an even more appealing choice for people on a budget or for those who are looking to stuff some stockings this Christmas. Even better, Crossway has decided to make a digital copy of the GSB available for free to someone in need for every purchase. In other words, you're not just buying a Bible for yourself or a loved one: you're buying one for someone across the world as well! And here you thought that you'd never have an opportunity to do mission work!

The ESV Global Study Bible is easily the best option that Crossway has to offer. With notes sufficient for the average Christian (you know, the one who feels that three pages on the various interpretations of Revelation 20 is a bit much), a wallet-friendly price, and a program to help you spread the Word where it's most desperately needed, the GSB is truly a blessing...and a must-buy.

Great Bible for a great cause

The Global Study Bible from Crossway is a study Bible that focuses on cultures across the globe and how to apply Biblical themes to an international context. The focus is on global issues such as government, the Church, world religions, social ethics, missions, and evangelism. I am reviewing the hard cover edition.

Cover and Binding
This edition is hard cover, although it is also available in paperback and imitation leather. The hard cover and imitation leather editions have a sewn binding, so they lay flat when opened. I would consider this a large hand-size Bible.

Text and Paper
The font is 7.5 point with a good amount of space between the lines (leading). The font is sharp and consistently dark. The references are much smaller and can be difficult to read. The notes are 6.5 point with the pop-out boxes being around 7 point. The paper is white and very opaque. This helps in making the text readable.

Layout
The text is in a double-column paragraph format. There are the standard ESV headings in the text. They are in italics so they stand out a little without being distracting. The verse numbers are small, but bolder than the text so verses are easy to find. Under the text are textual notes. Under the textual notes are the references. Under the references are the commentary notes, which are also in double-column format.

Book Introductions
Each book of the Bible is introduced with a timeline, author, date, recipients, theme, purpose, key themes, an outline, and a map. Next is a one to two page article that discusses that books global message. Most introductions take around four pages.

Textual Notes and References
There are 80,000 cross references. Rather than placing the references on the side or in the center column, they are located under the text just above the commentary notes. I like this location because it makes it easier to find the reference. The references include verse numbers in bold to make them easy to find. They are keyed to the text with the standard keys - letters for verses and numbers for notes. Textual notes are placed just above the references so they don't mix together making them difficult to see. This format works really well.

Commentary Notes
The commentary notes include the standard Study Bible explanations of verses. There are also pop-out boxes for facts (900 of them) and character profiles (120). The Facts sections include information about words, places, events, and just facts in general. The Profiles sections are short biographies of key Biblical characters. The commentary section also includes charts and maps (120). The charts often include comparisons between people, Old and New Testaments, theological themes, lists, etc. The maps show where events took place, missionary journeys, temples, etc. I don't agree with all of the theological notes, but that is to be expected. I caution all readers with every study Bible with notes, so I'm not just picking on this one.

Articles
There are 14 articles that are of course geared toward the global church. Topics include salvation, the importance of the global Church, reading, understanding, and applying the Bible, the reliability of the Bible, ethics, and more. They were written from authors across the globe and take about 50 pages. Some are theological, but most are more general and applicable to a wide variety of theological viewpoints.

Glossary
The glossary takes 12 pages and primarily covers many types of definitions. Some are factual, such as astrology, BC, and canon, while others are theological such as advocate, atonement, pantheism, and YAHWEH. Some of the definitions include verse references. The glossary covers a good range of words that often have to be explained in conversations. It is a good addition to this Bible.

Concordance
The concordance is 56 pages and is in three columns per page. It has a decent amount of entries. There are 52 entries for "God".

Maps
There are 15 color maps that span 16 pages. They're not as bright and colorful as those from other publishers, but they fit the design of this Bible. They are mostly tans, browns, olive green, and light blue for water. One of the maps has a topographical pop-out. I like the maps a lot, but I'd like to see the addition of an index to maps.

Online Global Study Bible
By buying the ESV Global Study Bible you get free access to the Online Global Study Bible. The online edition gives you the ability to write and manage notes, highlight the text, share your highlights with others, and access resource modules. The Online Global Study Bible alone is worth the price of the Bible. It can be accessed anywhere there is an Internet connection. To make it even better, for every Online Global Study Bible that is registered, a free copy is given to someone in the world based on the greatest need. THAT alone is worth the price of the Bible.

Conclusion
Crossway is a nonprofit organization with the focus of providing great quality Bibles at great prices. The price and quality of the ESV Global Study Bible is a testament to that mission. There is plenty of great material at a great price. This is a good Bible and a good cause. This Bible is a win/win.

Excellent ESV Translation Study Bible at a Great Price

I love the ESV, its a great translation of the bible and Crossway has done an outstanding job with the many versions that they have produced of it. The Global ESV Study Bible is the latest version and is really a subset of the ESV Study Bible that was released a few years ago. I have that version and from reviewing the sample pages that are available of the Global Study Bible with my ESV Study Bible I find that I already own most of the material that is in the GSB. The GSB does have new articles that are not in the ESV SB. I can't say I will buy this version of the ESV but I may have if it were available before I purchased the original ESV Study Bible. The original is larger with more articles and longer notes but mostly the same information. It has full color maps and illustrations which the GSB also has but not in the same colors, just one shade of tan. The text size for both are about the same for the paperback versions, I have the hardcover ESV SB and that has a larger font than any of the GSB editions. The ESV SB also has 500 plus more pages and costs more than the GSB. If I had to decide now I would have purchased the paperback ESV GSB for about $12 here on Amazon rather than spend the $30 at the time for the ESV SB. The GSB is about 90% of the ESV SB and less than half the cost, so its a wonderful buy.

Pricing on this seems to have changed as recently from as low as $8.70 to nearly $14. Still about half the cost of the ESV Study Bible.

The Wine, Beer and Spirits Handbook

I bought this book for a class I was in at the Art Institute of California. It was the required text and had everything I needed to learn inside. Since the class, I have still used this book to continue my education on Wine, Beer and Spirits. I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in beverages. The book arrived on time and was in perfect brand new condition. Buy this book! you will not be disappointed.

I bought this for a course I was going to take but events led me to changing my schedule and now I am still waiting to really use it. I have, however, skimmed it and it seems like a very good book to start off with if you want to get to know that basics about wines and spirits.

Extremely thorough book!

A bit dry at times - but what do you expect? It's history and, no pressure, but if you don't pass this test you don't get to stay! I thought that it might have been helped out a bit by a timeline as the dates seemed to jump around a lot as we moved from subject to subject - it was difficult to piece all of the reforms together with the reigning monarch/ prime minister. The time line I created from it - because I am HORRIBLE with dates! - was two full pages so, I can see where it might be difficult. I also found the amount of "notable modern day names" a bit excessive - too mind boggling to comprehend along with everyone else so I just concentrated on the ones that I figured must be the most important based on the practice questios in the accompanying book and online.

Not worth reading unless you have to swat for The Life in The UK test. UK history was painted with such broad brush strokes that in some places the book was rendered factually inaccurate. One cannot help think that someone at the Home Office sat with a black pen crossing out swathes of British, particularly uncomfortable English history, which they'd prefer new immigrants to the UK not to know, or even to forget.

Very good reading to ALL, not only for the newcomers.Some of the text obviously does look like joke, but still have a serious meaning. Something that everybody can talk about. I have read the previous ones too. :))

About the Author
Barbara Aehlert is the President of Southwest EMS Education, Inc. in Phoenix, Arizona and Pursley, Texas. She has been a registered nurse for more than 30 years with clinical experience in medical/surgical and critical care nursing and, for the past 18 years, in prehospital education. Barbara is an active CPR, First Aid, ACLS, and PALS instructor and takes a special interest in teaching basic dysrhythmia recognition to nurses and paramedics. She is a consultant with the Southwest Ambulance paramedic program in Mesa, Arizona, and an active member of the Pursley, Texas, Volunteer Fire Department.

Text Book Required - Great Learning

I am only half-way through the class. Everything is in here for EKG Certification. What more can be said, it wasn't a choice, it's a required text book. The class is great and the instructor is a wealth of knowledge. I cannot wait to begin my new career.
