Great book for beginners

Programming is definitely not my forte. I have always had difficulties in understanding computer language and this book was easy to read and understand. The book is not expensive and it teaches you what you need to know. The C programming is one of the most important of programming languages. The author gives you an introduction into the C computer language and them moves on to give you the fundamentals to the language. This was very helpful to me in learning the basics. Recommend this book for those new to programming as well as those looking to brush up on their skills.

Great foundation

I am starting learning C programming because my friend taught me how to do it. When I am alone I want to study C programming so that I can learn on my own. I researched books for C programming and I saw this book. This book explained to me the history of C programming language. I learned the program structure that is used in C programming. The keywords and data type discussed well in this book and I know many keywords now. Other topics in this book are tackled very clear. I am so excited to share this to my friend.

About the Author

Chapter One
The Chameleon's Curse

I was born in Jamaica. My earliest memories are of being on my grandmother's farm in St. Elizabeth's, which was considered the cush-cush or upper-class section of Jamaica, between Negril and Kingston. We lived in what they called the country, and I just remember running free and not having a care in the world. I didn't come to the States until I was about six. That's when life became complicated.

I was the youngest of eight. The baby. My mother said I was the cutest baby she had ever seen. When I six months old, she entered me in this contest to be the face of O-Lac's, which was Jamaica's version of Gerber baby food. They were looking for a fat, healthy baby, and I won the contest. I was the face -- this smiling, fat, toothless baby -- on O-Lac's for years. I guess I was destined for stardom.

My parents moved to the United States when I was three. One by one, each of my sisters left, too. I know that my father had a government job in Jamaica. I don't know what happened with it. I just remember talk of "opportunity" and "education" in America.

In Jamaica, you had to pay for education after primary school. And getting an education was big in my family. So maybe that's why they left. I never asked. You didn't ask questions when I was growing up. My family was traditional, and kids didn't ask adults questions, you just accepted things -- whatever those things were.

I ended up being in Jamaica with my grandmother and one of my older sisters. My parents would come back from time to time, but I was there for a couple of years before they finally moved me to the States, too.

I loved my family, but I never quite fit in with them. I was always a little bit different. My sister Dawn was the rebel, the black sheep. I watched how she used to get beatings -- I mean real beatings, not some little old spankings -- and I didn't want any of that. My parents, mostly my father, tried to beat the rebellion out of Dawn. It didn't work, though. It might have made her more rebellious.

By the time I got to the States, she was hanging out with the wrong crowds, staying out way beyond the curfew and trying to sneak in the house and getting caught. She used to steal my father's gun. She would fight. And eventually she turned to drugs. But that was my girl! I looked up to Dawn. I just didn't want to suffer any of those beatings, so I was a "good girl." I did what I was told -- as far as they knew -- and I stayed out of trouble. But I was always a little different.

When I was on that farm in Jamaica, I would get into all kinds of trouble. One day I remember I got ahold of a machete. I was only like five years old. Don't ask me how I got it or where I got it from, but I had this machete and a bucket. I went around the farm looking for lizards or chameleons. They had all kinds of creatures on this farm, but there were a lot of chameleons. I was fascinated by them, watching them go to a green plant and turn green, then to the ground and turn brown. I walked around looking for them, and I would chop them in half and throw them into my bucket.

By the end of the day, I had a bucket full of chopped-up lizards. My sister came out and saw what I was doing and she scared the hell out of me.

"What is that you're doing?!" she screamed. "Dem lizards gwon ride ya."

She was telling me that the lizards were going to haunt me. That my doing that had unleashed some kind of curse.

"Dem gwon ride ya!" my sister kept saying in her Jamaican patois.

Well, they did ride me. As I got older, a lot of my friends would tell me, "You're such a chameleon."

It was true. I was real good at blending in. I was good at taking on whatever was around me. If I hung out with thugs, I would be a thug. If I hung out with a prince, it was nothing for me to become royalty. My ability to fit in has been a blessing, but also a curse.

The very thing that got me into Salt-N-Pepa -- going with the flow and doing what I was told -- was the same thing that got me in a lot of bad situations. Being a chameleon or just going with whatever wasn't good for me. It allowed me to put up with things I shouldn't have put up with. It allowed me to be with people I should not have been with because I wasn't able to just be myself and say no or walk away. It never let me ask, "What do I want out of life?" It never allowed me to really think about me and my needs first.

Enjoyed reading her journey

I saw that this book wasn't available until Aug 26th. Well, I pre-ordered it from Amazon and was pleasantly surprised to receive it on the 19th.

This book was a quick read and I finished it in 2 days. Overall, I liked the book. Pepa starts her story from about the age of 5 and it ends with her in the present. In between that time period, Pepa goes through ALOT with the things she has experienced. I don't want to give things away, but I emphasize ALOT based on here relationships with males, particularly her relationship with Treach of Naughty by Nature. When they divorced, I never knew why, but in this book, she reveals what she went through and why their relationship just had to end. As a matter of fact, I had to skip parts of the chapters that dealt with him because it was too much. I am happy she left, for her and her children's good. It is a powerful testimony.

As for the rest of Pepa's story, you learn about her family, childhood, rise to fame, her gifts and curses, her and Cheryl's relationship as Salt N Pepa and as friends. In the end, you learn how Pepa has grown and takes some responsibility for her life experiences and how she knows to make better choices for herself. She has learned her true worth and to not accept less.

I strongly feel that this book could help other girls and women who have had similar experiences. I was pleased with the book and would recommend it. I take off 1 star because there are times in the book where a story would veer off and not bring closure to that story until later. Also, the events didn't seem to be in order at times.

I surprised my daughter with this. she's looking forward to reading, since she's nuts about the Shoop song.. I'll read when she's done.Sounds like a great recounting of her life and career.

After reading Faith Evan's auto, I was truly anticipating reading Pepa's as well. I am so proud of the ladies of hip hop. Pepa along with her partner Salt and DJ Spinderella were one of the first ladies to break through (after Roxanne Shante)the heavily male dominated rap world and become stars in their own right. This book discusses her life BEFORE, during and afterwards. Born in Jamaica as the last of a large family, she was molested as a child, yet along the way, is given the gift of discerning danger and seeing visions. She becomes famous,gets in bad relationships, marries Treach from Naughty by Nature(and divorces him), unexpectedly, her other half in the group Salt suddenly quits the act, leaving the other two wondering what happened; despite of that, she moves on into reality tv shows and gets to meet some interesting folks along the way. Not bad for a girl from Jamaica via Queens. A great cautionary reminiscing tale for those who want to remember the days or want to learn from the lessons of Pep. Once I finally got this book, I hated to give it up. It remains one of my favorite books. Great job Pep!

Vanessa Hunt is a Walt Disney Imagineer and a lifelong Disney aficionado. Her education is in art history, and she is part of the group responsible for the more than 130,000 pieces of original artwork preserved in the Walt Disney Imagineering Art Library. She has been curator of several Imagineering exhibits featuring many of the works from the Art Library collection, and she has consulted for The Walt Disney Family Museum. Vanessa is also the coauthor of the wildly popular Poster Art of the Disney Parks from Disney Editions. She is currently designing a new book featuring the art of Disney Legend Marc Davis, and coauthoring an illustrated volume about the history of the Disney Monorail.

Not at all what you would expect - the title is misleading

I had very high hopes for this book. Based on the product description, I was expecting to get tons of actual park maps from 1955 to today. Instead, what you get is a hodgepodge of concept art renderings with very little explanation of what you're looking at. There are very few actual maps of the parks. While the concept art included is beautiful to look at, it's all very poorly organized. The book jumps around from park to park without any transition. Instead of placing things chronologically, or by individual park, everything is kind of just smashed together. There are different chapters, but the chapter titles don't mesh with what's actually in that chapter. It's just a poorly designed layout for the book. There is very little in the way of descriptions of what you're looking at or why. Also, the other obviously had a huge fascination with Tom Sawyer's Island because he includes more renderings of it than he does for some of the actual parks.

If you are looking for a book that contains all the park maps from all Disney parks from 1955 to today, this book is not for you. If you're looking for something to kill some time while you're on the toilet, this book might fit that bill. But, it would be an expensive toilet read.

Seriously, if I had paid the full $30 retail price, I'd be mad and sending the book right back to Amazon. There are a lot of really good books out there about a Disney park history. This is not one of them

Aerial Concept Art of the Disney Parks

If this book were called "Concept Art of the Disney Parks," it would be getting 5-stars across the board.

I was relieved to see that others had expected something different just like I had.

50% of the book is made of gorgeous, well-curated, glowing aerial concept art of Disney Parks – that special sort of concept art Disney artists do so well, showing just enough to romanticize the place while keeping the details soft. There's lush, beautiful artwork of Disneyland Paris seen from the sky; concept art of Hong Kong Disneyland's new mini-lands; everything in the book about New Fantasyland or Shanghai Disneyland is in the form of (beautiful, high quality) scans of famous (and readily available) concept art.

30% of the book is filled with one-off "novelty" maps, like the cartoon-ified, caricature map of Disney California Adventure produced solely to hang on construction walls during its rebirth; delicate, elegant "souvenir" maps of DisneySea meant to be purchased in a gift shop in large format.

A further 15% is populated by a lot (maybe too many) of the "in-universe" maps: the "map" of the Hundred Acre Wood that serves as the backdrop to the loading area in Tokyo's Hunny Hunt ride; the exaggerated cartoon "map" of your "sailing route" in DisneySea's Sinbad's Storybook Voyage; the "map" of Vulcania that hangs in the Nautilus' map room in Disneyland Paris' walkthrough attraction; the elegant map of the world in the ceiling of Tokyo's Teddy Roosevelt lounge. And while those are maps, and they are in Disney Parks, it feels as if they should be relegated to their own chapter, because they're not what you and I had in mind when we looked at this book.

You and I came here for what's squeezed into the remaining 5% of the book – Disney Parks guide maps... y'know... the ones your pick up at the turnstile on your way in (or, for many of us, on the way out). So many of us make a hobby of collecting these maps not just as souvenirs, but as works of art. We use them to trace parks' growth over time. And I suspect *most* people who pre-ordered this book a year in advance like I did were expecting it to be a comprehensive collection of those guide maps for each Disney Park through its history.

Chapter 1 - Disneyland Park
Chapter 2 - Magic Kingdom
Chapter 3 - Epcot
Chapter 4 - Tokyo DisneySea
...

What you and I were looking for was to trace these parks via their guide maps. Take DIsney California Adventure (would've been Chapter 8, by my count?). Sure, start off the chapter with some concept art and give me a history of the park's development. But then, I want the map – the guide map from the turnstile – that guests picked up in 2001. Then I want to turn the page and see the 2004 map and I want text to point out what's been added, subtracted, and changed at the park (and thus, to its map). Then I want to see 2007's. Then 2012's for the Grand Re-opening. Then today's. Right? I want to trace the parks' life through its guide map art. I suspect that's what you wanted, too.

Yes, this is a book worth having in your collection. But it's NOT what you imagine it will be. Text is very, very minimal (an opening page for each chronological chapter, then simple citations of artists and year for each map included in that decade+ period) and within the broad range of each chapter, you'll zoom indiscriminately from continent to continent. Pages 82 - 83, Tokyo Disneyland "fine art" souvenir map; 84 - 85, Blizzard Beach map; 86 - 87, Animal Kingdom aerial concept art; 88 - 89, Tom Sawyer Island Explorer's Map...

Is this book worth having in your collection? Yes. It's a fair price for a beautiful book of artwork. And *if* this book were called "Aerial Concept Art of the Disney Parks," people would've known what they were getting and this would be 5-stars across the board as a well-curated collection of art with minimal text. As it is, you and I came here for a collection of Disney Parks guide maps, and this is not that.

Some nice art with little substance. A missed opportunity.

On the positive side this book features a variety of different maps, from souvenir "fun maps" to concept art and advertising maps, covering all aspects of Disney parks, and even including some unexpected and easily overlooked items. But there is very little information given about the specific maps, which I would think a book devoted entirely to maps would provide.

For example, they included a Fortune Red pirate treasure map, which is great, but offers absolutely no explanation as to what "Fortune Red" is, what the map depicts or where you would find it in the park... even one sentence could have answered that. Same with the Magic Kingdom MSK maps, also included here without any explanation as to what MSK is or what these maps were used for (they were actually components for an in-park game). It's just, "Here's the MSK maps. The end."

Some other reviewers have mentioned the small dimensions of the book make it hard to appreciate the detail of the larger maps, and I agree... a slightly larger format would have alleviated much of that (no, the book would not have to be "map sized", LOL, just larger than the rather diminutive 11" x 12" that it is.)

Finally, this isn't clear from the item description photo, but the hardcover is actually split down the middle, and opens out left and right, gate-fold style. This means the pages are actually twice as wide as the left cover and hang over the edge as you flip through, which is kind of annoying.

I still am reluctantly recommending the book because there is some great artwork in here that I haven't seen in other books, but it could have been much, much better.

Lucy Knisley's Delicious Life

Relish: My Life in the Kitchen is a memoir in comic form about the author's life experiences with food. I read it over the course of a couple of nights and really enjoyed it - though I highly suggest you read it when you have delicious food in the house and not when you are in the midst of a grocery shopping drought like me. It's a little depressing to read a book about the joys of cooking and eating well when you yourself are eating Morningstar buffalo wings and whatever you can salvage from a bag of green beans. But other people plan their grocery shopping better than I do! And Knisley does spend some of her book defending the joys of fast food restaurants and Ramen soup, so I didn't feel so bad.

And honestly, Knisley is such a bright and cheerful person who draws such bright and cheerful (and colorful!) pictures and shares such bright and cheerful food stories that it's impossible to feel bad when reading this book. I'm a big food lover myself, so I can identify with Knisley's inability to separate places she's visited from the food she's eaten while there. And the way she talks about potluck dinners and having friends over to share a meal - I absolutely agree with her, it's one of my favorite things in the world to have or attend a dinner party with close friends.

This book doesn't have a plot. It is episodic in nature, starting with Knisley's childhood first in Manhattan, and then in upstate New York, through trips to Japan and Mexico and then her college stint in Chicago. She ends each chapter with a recipe (shared in a lovely cartoon format that I thoroughly appreciated), and throughout the book she has a lot of other really interesting tips and tricks. For example, she has a two-page spread on cheese that I found fascinating and even shared with my boss at work the next day.

Knisley is much more down-to-earth about her food than a lot of food writers are. While she grew up on all sorts of gourmet dishes and enjoys them, she also likes McDonald's fries and Ramen soup. She points out that America is still growing into its food culture and that we can all help shape and define it in a way that fits us best. And that sometimes, if you want something to taste really good - you should just buy it from a professional! It's a refreshing and fun take on food culture, and one that I really enjoyed.

Freaking awesome

I slightly waffled between giving this four stars and giving it five stars. The book has some minor flaws, but none that really ruined it for me as a whole. Relish pretty much falls into the type of graphic novel I've come to expect from this publisher: a nice alternative/indie type niche read that is of good quality.

While this is undeniably an autobiography of her life, it's also a story of food. Good food, bad food, and all that falls between those two groups. Knisley utilizes an episodic format with recipes or culinary advice sandwiched inbetween the tales. Most of the story is told in a linear format, but there are one or two mentions of her childhood later in the book. This works well, as it keeps the reader from getting too bored with the minute details. After all, meals are a relatively short portion of our lives and daily routine when you get down to it (even those meals that last for a few hours), so it makes sense that the stories should only be a few pages at a time. This might frustrate some readers that want to know more about a specific time period, though. I have to say that occasionally I wanted to read more about one or two things, such as Knisley's time at college.

The artwork was something I really enjoyed and it helped out in some instances where the words couldn't entirely portray the scene alone. Now you might be thinking "but it's a graphic novel- it's naturally reliant upon pictures, right?" I'd agree, but there are some instances in graphic novels where the scene is given a complete narration/description, but is so well depicted in the artwork that the written descriptions are superfluous and/or just a bonus extra. The scene I'm specifically thinking of is the scene of Knisley enjoying a brief respite from her busy catering/waitstaff job when she finds herself in a room with a large metallic sculpture she'd always admired from afar. Her communion with the piece is very well drawn and does an amazing job of showing her peace and reverence for the artwork and her joy at being given the ability to be alone with it due to her job. It's something that I think all of us can relate to in some form, even if we're not artists.

In the end I'm giving this five stars. My main gripe of wanting more is pretty minor when I got down to it and I really loved this book. It's an easy read that I know I'll end up flipping through again in the future specifically because it's written in little vignettes rather than a longer narrative.

Finally - Something Original for Foodies

I am really tired of self proclaimed foodies who blog/write about food (My apologies to those who are true foodies and understand the fine art of creative, insightful, useful blogging - you are a rare breed). I find too much out there that is pompous, self-serving, and boring to read. So thank you Ms. Knisley for your sense of humor, clever illustrations, and honest approach to food and why/how we love it. I took my own trip down memory lane right along with you. You have a realistic and refreshing POV so please continue to write about food - or anything else for that matter.

This book contained fact-based analogy questions that would never appear on the real exam. CARTER is to MONDALE as (some other president) is to (corresponding vice-president). Really? Mondale? The SSAT is not testing children on their knowledge of 1970s politics.

Good practice workbook

Good book but I wish it had more math problems. My daughter got all the math problems correct in this prep book but she just took the actual test today and the math turned out to be more difficult than this books questions made them out to be. The English section was very good though. Challenging vocabulary and analogies.

pretty good

So far, which is like 30 pages, they give decent advise. I think a course with a liver person would be much better though. But since those are thousands and this is 20, I guess this works for now. Not enough practice questions though. you'll want to get a supplementary question book.

The novel itself is great, always has been

I am an educator and our school is utilizing Kindle for reading books this year. The novel itself is great, always has been. I have big issues, however, with the book extras (character list, glossary, themes, etc). These areas are full of misspelled words, incorrect information, and even, at times, inappropriate information. Who writes these and why does Kindle allow such unprofessional material added to their books? A Christmas Carol is not the first classic I've seen with problems in this area. I reported abuse each time something appeared, but where does that go? Kindle, restore my confidence in your professionalism and hire some professionals to write your book extras. I'm not impressed with what I've seen so far.

Good background informatio for a great story

Every Christmas season I reread three books and Christmas Carol is one of them. I very much like the fact that this edition is unexpurgated ... no dumbing down the literature here, thank heavens. I also enjoyed the annotation although much of it was already known to me. Dickens, flaws and all, still encapsulates for me what the Christmas spirit should represent. I like having this version on my fire so I can readily access it come December ... or any other month for that matter. I think it speaks volumes about the climate of greed in America and how very much we have to learn about helping those less fortunate than we.

MatchBook listed this book as free, since I had bought the print version already. Amazon charged me anyway. I realize this is not a rating of the Kindle book as such (the print version is 5-Stars for one of Dicken's best works), but Amazon requested a rating and I'm at a loss of how to give the overall purchase a score. Hence. 3-Stars.
